Octane is actively recruiting engineers and developers. We met with Blake, Software Engineer II SRE, to find out what it’s like to work at the startup revolutionizing the buying experience for major recreational purchases.
How would you describe Octane’s Culture?
Octane is a driven group of individuals that’s also laid back and relaxed. You can have casual conversations with people at all levels of the organization or can slack anyone to learn how something works. I have 1:1s with our CTO. I enjoy the openness and the flat structure. Being able to ask questions is key.
It’s cliche to say the company is like a family but people genuinely care about each other. The company celebrates milestones and promotions and there are tons of congratulations in Slack.
And my team is great. It’s serious work but we have a good laugh while doing it. I’m the happiest I’ve been in any role ever.
Why did you find Octane appealing from a technical standpoint?
I have a lot of experience but I like to learn and want to grow my skills and acumen with different tools and products. It’s really exciting that we’re cloud native, leveraging AWS. I’ve worked on cloud platforms before, but most financial companies see the cloud as experimental. There were still thousands of servers in datacenters that I was responsible for – including nasty issues like dealing with firmware or hardware compatibility issues. To now only work with cloud assets was a big driver for me.
It’s also exciting that we use python. I’m a python developer, it’s a personal passion, so I’m thrilled that I can understand the codebase of the software I’m supporting as an SRE. In previous roles, I was responsible for systems written in legacy languages, hacked together with perl scripts and XML — a much appreciated change, for sure!
What has your experience at Octane been like so far?
It’s been fantastic. I come from Asset Management, which has a totally different culture and work life balance. I was tired of working sixty hours a week and meeting with people in vastly different time zones.
At Octane, we take our jobs seriously and are committed to building the best product possible, but it’s much less stressful. They really care about work life balance.
In my first week, I was told about the generous PTO and to make sure I use it. Other places say PTO is unlimited but they look down on you for taking time off. At Octane, people take vacation. One of my colleagues just took off to spend time with his brother. It’s truly take it as you need it, which is cool.
Is there anything else you’d like to share?
I’m a huge evangelist for Octane. Who doesn’t want to work for a fintech startup with 300+ people and a great culture that does really cool things? I have work life balance, amazing colleagues and a great tech stack. I’m in love.
